1. What is the goal of the Sylvan program?
Sylvan helps students develop academic skills and abilities to become sure of themselves, strong, and confident. 2. What is Sylvan's "individualized approach" to instruction?
Sylvan starts with a battery of educational tests to identify skill gaps. From the testing, an educational plan is developed. No two educational programs are identical. This plan is quite specific and includes short term and long term goals, teaching materials, and special considerations for each student's instruction. After each hour of instruction, the student's education plan is reviewed and modified for the next hour of instruction. Students progress at their own pace, mastering skills as they show adequate knowledge.

Sylvan instructors teach no more than three students at one time. Each student receives individual instruction from the teacher, who is seated at a table with the students. This is followed by the student's independent practice of the skill. Should a student need extra help, the teacher provides immediate assistance guiding the student throught the work. Three to one is the optimal student to teacher ratio as it provides time for individualized instruction as well as the opportunity for indeoendent practice. It prepares students to work on their own with their homework and in their school classrooms.

3. How is Sylvan different from a tutor?
Tutors can help a student pass a course, but they do not get at the underlying academic problem. A tutor may be the best answer if a student's problem is of recent origin and is limited to a specific course. However, most academic problems are the result of skills that were not mastered in previous years. The Sylvan Skills Assessment™ reveals if there are skill gaps at earlier levels and provides a targeted educational plan to teach and master those gaps. Thus, the Sylvan intervention not only addresses the current academic difficulty, but prevents the problem from extending into the future.

4. How successful is Sylvan with students?
Upon completion of the first 36 hours of instruction during 2006, the Academic Reading students improved an average of 2.1 grade levels in Vocabulary, and 2.9 grade levels in reading Comprehension. Math Essentials students increased 2.6 grade levels in Computation and 3.0 in Concepts and Applications. The test used for the pre-test and the post-test is the California Achievement Test, a standard achievement test use by many public schools across the country.

5. How does Sylvan measure progress with students?
The answer to every question asked, every task assigned and every problem attempted is recorded in the student's Sylvan educational plan. The student must meet objective criteria before a skill is considered mastered. For example, in Vocabulary a student must score three consecutive 100%s or five 80%s. The next prescribed skill is only addressed when the preceding assigned skill has been mastered. After every 36 hours of instruction, students are tested to measure progress with learned skills. Test results are also used to update and modify the students program to continue to meet goals and objectives.

6. How long does it take for students to reach their goals?
Since each student's goals are individualized, it is not possible to say how long a program will take until after the Sylvan Skills Assessment™ has been administered. During the enrollment conference we give parents an estimate of the length of time it will take to reach the student's goals based on our computer database and the professional judgment of our Director of Education. Since Sylvan has helped over a million students during the past 25 years we can predict the approximate length of a program. The average length of enrollment at Sylvan Learning Center is 72 hours. Some of our programs are as short as 12 hours, while some students require as many as 125 or more hours of instruction to complete their educational plan.

13. How much does Sylvan cost?
The Sylvan educational program is individualized and intense. Each hour of a student's instruction requires approximately another one and half-hours of lesson preparation, program monitoring and other professional services. This amount of professional time produces the greatest gains in the shortest time possible for Sylvan students. Sylvan has 25 years of demonstrated effectiveness. Other tutors may say they cost less, but they do not put the same quality ingredients into their tutoring as found in the concentrated Sylvan program.

A Sylvan instructional hour costs $41 or less. The Sylvan Skills Assessment™, which costs $150, provides specific information on the students academic skills and gives an estimate of the number of hours required to meet a student's educational needs. Once a student has paid the assessment fee and a $45 registration fee, there are no additional fees above tuition. Most families purchase the entire program designed to meet their student's needs, and receive discounts up to 10%. Other families pay monthly. We do not require contracts. If a student completes the program earlier than predicted, we will refund tuition for any unused sessions.

15. Can Sylvan provide enrichment for good students?
Sylvan works with students wanting to get ahead, as well as those needing help to catch up or keep up in school. Students enter the program at the level based on their performance on the Sylvan Skills Assessment™. The Sylvan curriculum is not a grade-based program. Students progress at their own pace, so students can develop skills beyond their current grade in school. Popular Sylvan enrichment programs are Advanced Reading, Academic Writing, and Study Skills. Sylvan programs can help students to get a step ahead of their class. Sylvan can help prepare them for the exceptional level of academic performance needed for admission to competitive colleges, graduate, and professional schools.
