ACT College Entrance Exam Preparation

More than three million college admissions tests are administered each year, making the ACT one of the most important exams that a high school student will ever take. In order to perform at their best, students should become familiar with the style and types of questions on the test, in order to avoid “trap-door answers.” In addition, students should boost their reading and vocabulary skills and learn specific process of elimination strategies. Above all, students need to work through as many practice questions and tests as possible in the weeks and months leading up to the actual exam.

To aid students in their preparation for these high-stakes tests, Sylvan Learning Centers offers an ACT College Admission Test Preparation Course.

Designed for high school students. The goal is to raise test scores by eliminating the high anxiety that comes with preparing for these important tests. Our proven test-taking strategies are combined with multiple practice exams to make students familiar with the test format, build their confidence, and avoid common mistakes, such as ‘trap-door’ answers, utilizing a team-based interactive learning approach in a small group setting. Unlike other preparation courses that are delivered in a large group lecture setting, Sylvan Prep classes are comprised of just 5 to 7 students per instructor.

To register for this exciting course just call us at (304) 842-0234 – Bridgeport Center or (304) 983-6114 – Morgantown Center today. Or use our Contact Us form.

Who should enroll? Any student who is serious about scoring well on the ACT exam should take this course. An extra point or two on the ACT can mean the difference between getting into a college/university and/or qualifying for a scholarship/financial assistance. The WV Promise Scholarship requires “ all students (GED, Home-schooled) to attain a composite score of 21 (with a minimum ACT sub score of 19 in all subject areas) on any single test date.” (*Promise Scholarship website 7/14/2004 subject to change)

My Child is on the Honor Roll, why do they need to attend this prep course? The ACT is designed to test a student’s ability to think and use logic processes and do it very quickly. Many of the strategies found to increase scores are not typical of a high school classroom. Sylvan’s ACT Prep teaches verbal and math strategies and High Order Thinking Skills while exposing the student to questions typically found on the ACT test.

What is taught? Expert teachers personalize instruction in a small group setting, while using state-of-the-art materials as they teach both subject content and test-taking strategies that prepare students for the ACT and provide skills that will continue to benefit students in their college years and beyond. Specifically, 24 hours of strategy and content instruction covering grammar, mechanics, punctuation, sentence structure, rhetorical skills, reading comprehension, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, scientific method, graph reading and data interpretation.

What kind of gains do students make? Statistics compiled nationally indicate that students who complete this course experience an average composite score increase of slightly more than two points. Those who do the assigned homework and apply themselves often do much better. Students have gained as much as 5 points.

What is the cost? Tuition for this small seminar class (5 to 7 students) is $595. The fee covers specially designed material that students keep, as well as refreshments. Tuition payments may be made in two equal payments—The entire tuition must be paid prior to the start of the course. (Prepay the class in full ten days before its scheduled starting date and take a 5% discount.)

Is there a guarantee? After the first day of instruction, any student (or parent of a student) who does not think the course will meet the student’s needs may notify the Sylvan office and withdraw. If all course materials are returned within 48 hours, a full tuition refund will be made.
